How Meal Calories Are Split: TDEE Divided by Meals
Per-meal calories start from your daily calorie goal (your TDEE or a target deficit). The simple formula is:
Calories per meal = Daily calories ÷ Number of meals
For a weighted split, you apply percentages instead. A common weighted split is 25 percent breakfast, 35 percent lunch, 30 percent dinner, and 10 percent snack, which front-loads the day. The calculator above supports both equal and weighted splits. First find your daily calorie goal with the Calorie Calculator.
Per-Meal Targets by Daily Total and Meal Count
The table below shows equal-split per-meal calories for common daily totals and meal counts (values rounded).
| Daily calories | 2 meals | 3 meals | 4 meals | 5 meals | 6 meals |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1500 | ~500 | ~375 | ~300 | ~250 | ~250 |
| 1800 | ~600 | ~450 | ~360 | ~300 | ~300 |
| 2000 | ~667 | ~500 | ~400 | ~333 | ~333 |
| 2200 | ~733 | ~550 | ~440 | ~367 | ~367 |
| 2400 | ~800 | ~600 | ~480 | ~400 | ~400 |
Values are equal-split estimates. For a weighted split, apply percentages (for example, 25/35/30/10) to the daily total instead.
Sample Day Layouts: 3 vs 4 vs 5 Meals
Three example day layouts for a 2,000 calorie goal, showing how the same total spreads across different meal frequencies.
3 meals (equal)
- Breakfast: ~667 cal
- Lunch: ~667 cal
- Dinner: ~667 cal
4 meals (equal)
- Breakfast: ~500 cal
- Lunch: ~500 cal
- Snack: ~500 cal
- Dinner: ~500 cal
5 meals (equal)
- Breakfast: ~400 cal
- Snack: ~400 cal
- Lunch: ~400 cal
- Snack: ~400 cal
- Dinner: ~400 cal
A weighted 3-meal-plus-snack layout on 2,000 calories might instead be 500 breakfast, 700 lunch, 600 dinner, and 200 snack, front-loading the day.
Protein Per Meal Guidance
Spreading protein across the day supports muscle maintenance and fullness. A common target is 20 to 40 grams of protein per meal for most adults. For a 2,000 calorie day with 3 meals and a 30 percent protein target (150 grams total), each meal averages about 50 grams of protein.
| Daily protein target | 3 meals | 4 meals | 5 meals |
|---|---|---|---|
| 120 g | ~40 g/meal | ~30 g/meal | ~24 g/meal |
| 150 g | ~50 g/meal | ~38 g/meal | ~30 g/meal |
| 180 g | ~60 g/meal | ~45 g/meal | ~36 g/meal |

Snacking Math: Fitting Snacks In
To fit snacks into a daily total, subtract snack calories first, then split the rest across meals. For example, on 2,000 calories with two 150-calorie snacks:
Remaining for meals = 2,000 − (2 × 150) = 1,700 calories
Per meal (3 meals) = 1,700 ÷ 3 ≈ 567 calories
Layout: 567 + 150 + 567 + 150 + 567 ≈ 2,000 cal
A typical snack is 100 to 250 calories. Choosing protein- or fiber-rich snacks (nuts, yogurt, fruit) keeps you fuller than high-sugar snacks. This is not medical advice — talk to your doctor before changing your eating pattern.
