Biological Age Calculator

Your birthday says one thing. Your body says another. Find out how old your body really is — and what you can do to turn back the clock.

Frequently Asked Questions

This is not medical advice — talk to your doctor. The sections below are educational estimates only. This calculator does not diagnose any condition, does not interpret lab results, and does not recommend any treatment. Talk to your doctor before acting on any result, especially if you have a health condition.

What Is Biological Age? — vs Chronological Age

Chronological age is simply how many years you have been alive. Biological age is an estimate of how old your body appears to function, based on lifestyle and health markers. Two people born on the same day can have different biological ages because of differences in exercise, sleep, diet, smoking, stress, and other factors.

Chronological age

Fixed. It is the number of years since birth and only moves in one direction.

Biological age

An estimate. It can be younger or older than your chronological age and can move in either direction with lifestyle changes.

This calculator gives a lifestyle-based estimate, not a lab measurement.

What Affects Biological Age: The Inputs Explained

The calculator scores eight lifestyle inputs. Each answer adds or subtracts points, and the total maps to an age adjustment.

InputBest scoreWorst score
BMINormal (18.5 to 24.9): +3Severely obese (35+): -7
Exercise5+ days mixed: +5None or rarely: -4
Sleep7 to 8 hours: +3Less than 6 hours: -4
DietMediterranean / plant-rich: +5Mostly processed: -5
SmokingNever smoked: +3Current daily smoker: -8
AlcoholNone or very rare: +2Heavy (7+ per week): -5
StressVery low: +3Very high: -5
Social and purposeStrong plus clear purpose: +3Isolated: -3

The possible total ranges from about -37 to +27, which the calculator maps to an age adjustment of -8 to +10 years.

How the Estimate Works: Method Transparency

The calculator uses a simple, transparent method:

Formula (educational)

1. Score = sum of all eight input values

2. Age adjustment = mapScore(score), from -8 to +10 years

3. Biological age = chronological age + age adjustment

This is a lifestyle-proxy model, not a clinical biomarker test. It is designed to be easy to understand and to show which habits help or hurt.

Biomarkers of Aging: Sleep, Activity, Diet, Smoking

Research on aging points to several lifestyle factors that track with biological age. This calculator uses lifestyle proxies for them:

💤

Sleep

Consistently sleeping 7 to 9 hours supports metabolic and cognitive health. Less than 6 hours is associated with faster biological aging.

🏃

Physical activity

A mix of cardio and strength training preserves muscle and heart health. Sedentary living is associated with an older biological age.

🥗

Diet

Mediterranean and whole-food patterns are associated with healthier aging. Heavily processed diets are linked to faster aging.

🚭

Smoking

Smoking is one of the strongest accelerators of biological age. Quitting is associated with a large reduction over time.

These are general associations from aging research, not clinical claims about any individual.

How to Lower Biological Age: Evidence-Based Levers

The same inputs the calculator scores are the levers you can change. The biggest impact usually comes from the factors with the largest score range:

  • Quit smoking — the single largest lever for most people who smoke.
  • Add strength training 2 to 3 times per week plus regular cardio to preserve muscle and heart health.
  • Improve sleep to 7 to 9 hours with a consistent schedule.
  • Shift toward a Mediterranean or whole-food diet with plenty of plants and minimal processed food.
  • Reduce chronic stress through meditation, nature, social time, or therapy.
  • Limit alcohol to light or none.
  • Build social connections and purpose — linked to healthier aging in long-lived populations.

No single change works overnight. Consistency over months and years is what moves biological age. This is educational, not a treatment plan.

Accuracy Limits: Estimates, Not Diagnosis

  • This calculator uses self-reported lifestyle answers, not lab measurements, so it reflects your habits rather than your biology directly.
  • It does not measure DNA methylation, inflammation markers, blood pressure, blood sugar, or any clinical biomarker.
  • The score-to-age mapping is a simple model for education, not a validated clinical tool like PhenoAge or GrimAge.
  • It cannot diagnose any disease, predict lifespan, or tell you whether a specific habit is safe for you.
  • Two people with the same answers can have different true biological ages because of genetics and factors the tool does not capture.
  • Use the result as a conversation starter with your doctor, not as a medical assessment.

Worked Example

A 45-year-old selects all healthy answers: normal BMI (+3), exercise 3 to 4 times per week (+3), 7 to 8 hours sleep (+3), Mediterranean diet (+5), never smoked (+3), light alcohol (+1), low stress (+1), strong social ties (+3).

Calculation

Score = 3 + 3 + 3 + 5 + 3 + 1 + 1 + 3 = 22

Age adjustment (score 20 or more) = -8 years

Biological age = 45 + (-8) = 37

Result: biological age 37, which is 8 years younger than chronological age (Excellent)

A person with the same chronological age but mostly unhealthy answers could score below -10 and see a biological age of 55. The spread shows how much lifestyle can move the estimate.

How to Use This Calculator & What to Do With Your Result

How to use it:

  1. Enter your chronological age.
  2. Answer all eight lifestyle questions honestly.
  3. Click the button to reveal your biological age estimate.
  4. Read the category message and the suggested levers if your result is above your chronological age.

What to do with your result:

  • If your biological age is older than your chronological age, pick one or two levers above to focus on first.
  • Retake the calculator every 3 to 6 months to track whether your changes move the estimate.
  • Use the result as a starting point for a conversation with your doctor, especially if you have a health condition.
  • Do not use this estimate in place of a clinical checkup or lab work.
  • Remember the estimate reflects your habits, not a diagnosis of any disease.
